Check your medication regularly; many people who abuse prescriptions get them from family and friends.

SECURE:

Lock up any medication you do not want anyone to access; reduce drug abuse, curb theft, and prevent overdose and accidental poisoning.

DISPOSE:

Drop off any unwanted/unused and expired medication at your local medication drop box or contact us for free at home disposal bags.

Who should secure their medications? Everyone.

What types of prescription, pet, or OTC (over the counter) medications should be secured? All medications! When should you secure your medications? At all times, especially during parties, house showings, open-houses, estate sales and when having; guests, renovations, and if you have children (any age).

Where should medications be secured? In a lock box, locked drawer, or locked cabinet. When these medications are no longer in use, they should be disposed of properly by being brought to a drop-box location.

Why should they be secured? There has been an increase in heroin and opiate overdoses. Many opiate use disorders begin with prescription drug abuse. Many people who misuse prescriptions get them from family or friends. Please help restrict availability by; monitoring, securing, and disposing of your prescription drugs.

    National DEA Drug Take Back Day is April 27th!

    It’s time to clean out those medicine cabinets and counters, folks! On Saturday, April 27th, you can dispose of any unwanted or expired over-the-counter, prescription or pet medications with no questions asked. Simply stop by one of the locations below from 10am-2pm and they will be safely disposed of. ***PLEASE NOTE: Sharps CANNOT be accepted at any event listed below.

    By disposing of medications in this way, not only are you getting rid of things you no longer need, but you are reducing the risk of having them in your home and/or opportunities for them to get into the wrong hands.

    No need to remove the label or anything. Once you drop them off, they are packaged for incineration and never seen again.

      Cattaraugus County, NY

      The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the US Drug Enforcement Agency, will be holding its semiannual National Pill Take Back day. The public can drop off prescription and non-prescription medication for proper disposal. We will not be taking any sharps during this take back. Vape pens or other e-cigarette devices can be collected only after the batteries are removed. Sheriff’s Office personnel is not responsible for removing batteries.

        The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office will take part in the Drug Enforcement
        Administration’s (DEA) Nationwide prescription Drug “Take Back” Initiative on
        Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

        Chemung County residents are being encouraged to turn in their expired and
        unused prescription medications for proper disposal. Residents are asked to keep
        the medications in their original container with the label intact; however, they may
        blacken out their name if they wish. All medications, ointments and sprays are
        accepted.

        *** Unfortunately, we will NOT be accepting sharps at this event. Residents
        can drop off their medications at the following locations with no questions asked:
